...Bureau. Nowhere does the decay show more vividly than in Fidel Castro himself. The old Castro was a swinger, an extrovert who enjoyed yakking with Western newsmen or moving along the embassy cocktail circuit. He gunned around town in a souped-up Oldsmobile, showing up everywhere for spur-of-the-moment rallies, TV talkathons, hilarious games of beisbol in Havana's public parks, spearfishing at Varadero beach and interminable gabfests with the students at Havana University, where he would often hold court until 4 or 5 a.m. No more. Today's Fidel Castro has a dull, grey look...

...Western observers see the new Japanese justification of the Pacific war as a logical outgrowth of the country's search for national identity. As the world's fifth-ranking industrial power and Asia's wealthiest nation, Japan feels a need to reassert itself in Asian affairs. Injury & Insult. In keeping with the new nationalism, Kim permits women to wear colorful national costume rather than pajama-style uniforms; men wear Western-style suits. Supplying the Bread. If such economic devices have a capitalist ring, Kosygin was not going to admit it. Anyone who talks of Russia's return to capitalism, he said, "only attests to wishful thinking." And though Kosygin's new measures represented the largest advance yet for the Western-style reform theories of Soviet economists like Evsei Liberman (TIME cover, Feb. 12), they were balanced by a tightening of the planning bureaucracy. Kosygin announced that the regional planning Sovnarkhozy set up by Khrushchev in 1957 would be abolished, and all Russian economic life put under 20 new national ministries...

Musical drama lies deep in the history of virtually every society. It is partly religious. Says Father R. L. Bruckberger, the unorthodox and literary French priest: "A solemn Mass in Latin-that for me is true opera." Western opera was born during the Renaissance, probably as an attempt to recreate Greek drama with its choruses and chanted poetry. From the first, the creators of opera felt the urge to avoid artifice. Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714-87) said that it was silly not to have "realistic" characters in opera-so he created Orfeo and Euridice, with their set, face-front arias...
