Last month Nelson and Mavericks owner Ross Perot Jr. jetted to Beijing to try to cajole the P.L.A. into letting Wang head west. It was a no go, though Nelson remains optimistic: "We didn't expect him to join us right away, but there is a strong possibility in the future." Wang seems eager. "I really enjoyed the game against the American Dream Team at the 1996 Olympics," he says (the U.S. won, 133-70). It's not only Wang's height that appeals to the NBA. U.S. basketball is already popular in China, and a Chinese player would boost...
Redstone hails from tenements on Boston's west side. His father was a small-time entrepreneur who opened one of the first drive-in theaters in the country in the 1930s. Redstone had the same scrappiness and a Harvard education, and turned a drive-in into a bustling movie-house company called National Amusements, which grew to 1,200 theaters. He is often credited with inventing the concept of the multiplex. Something of a late bloomer, Redstone didn't hit the big time until 1987, when at age 64 he put virtually all the assets of his company at risk...

Palestinian sources said the meeting was positive, and had been initiated by Barak to reassure Arafat after the Palestinians objected to comments by the Israeli leader on West Bank settlements and other issues. The Israeli leader has adopted an approach dramatically different to that of his predecessor, Benjamin Netanyahu, seeking to combine concessions to conservative constituencies at home with parallel concessions on other fronts to the Palestinians. He hopes to persuade Arafat to agree to Israeli annexation of parts...
...easing of sanctions is symbolically important in continuing Washington?s policy of using economic inducements to coax better behavior out of the rogue state. Congressional critics might add that it could also be taken as a vindication of North Korea?s policy of extorting economic concessions out of the West by behaving badly and threatening worse. Five years ago, North Korea agreed to dismantle its nuclear weapons program in exchange for a massive energy assistance program from South Korea, the U.S. and Japan. When those countries were slow to deliver on promised energy aid, Pyongyang feinted toward rebuilding its nuclear...
...some more. The less said about last week the better, except "Who knew?" and "We're sure going to learn from our mistakes this time, coach." This week, we draw our strength from the San Diego Chargers, winless but tops in the wild and wacky AFC West because, well, they haven't lost any games yet either. Which just goes to show, you can win if you don't play, a strategy we just might be willing to consider if we don't make up some ground this week...
