...spite of such dry spots, the U.S. Weather Bureau called it the country's fifth wettest July since 1817. It blamed the East Coast's rain on a northward migration (to a point off New York) of the eastern high pressure area, known to weathermen as the "Bermuda high," that usually lies off the Carolinas. That brought southeast winds, dripping with moisture picked up from the hot Gulf Stream and the Caribbean. Annoyed with vagrant Bermuda highs, the New York Times decided that they are "an invention of the devil and should be abolished." But the devil...
...society's Cornelius Vanderbilt: "This is the dullest, wettest political convention I ever attended. . . . Sitting here in this vast arena where history has been carved out so many times before, I cannot help but be reminded of the mediocrity of these meager...
This week General MacArthur sprang his surprise. U.S. troops, he announced, were fighting in the vicinity of Buna. Evidently the dirty, sweating U.S. Army engineers had hacked a crude road through the world's wettest, highest jungle, enabling combat troops to cross the mountains on the Australians' flank and knock at the Japs' back door. More troops came in planes which landed on a natural strip discovered in the jungle. Said General MacArthur: "The Allied forces now control all of Papua except the beachhead in the Buna-Gona area...
Well, the rains come, alright, and the dam breaks, and George Brent flounders around in ten feet of water, and on the whole it's one of the wettest movie-going evenings since "The Hurricane." But unlike "The Hurricane" it was a bit wet from the critical point of view, too. A cast headed by Myrna Loy and Tyrone Power has a right to expect a decent script with which to work. But 20th Century Fox let them down with the script of "The Rains Came." For instance: Brent to Loy, "It's exciting seeing you again." Loy to Brent...
...nature of which expansive Southern California does not boast is floods. After a 227-day drought ending with December temperatures above 90°, a polar air mass collided with a wave of damp tropical air, condensed it in seven days of cloudburst. The precipitation, 7.26 in., made the wettest early December since 1889, reminded frightened Los Angelenos of their disastrous floods last March (11 in. in five days). Casualty: a ten-year-old boy fell and was knocked unconscious, drowned in a puddle. Wisecrack: Radio Comedian Bob Hope complained that he had been arrested for going through a traffic light...
