Surprisingly, the idea for the series was conceived in 1977 when General William Westmoreland suggested that Boston-affiliated WGBH depict the Vietnam story from a military perspective. "The Westmoreland meeting got us thinking. In the end, we decided to develop a series encompassing all points of view," one producer recalls.
