...records on Vanguard. Baez has a staggeringly beautiful voice. Her rendition of "Old Blue" on her latest Vanguard release is also excellent for checking up on the distortion of your phono-cartridge. Theodore Alevizos, a former WHRB Balladeer, has a wonderful recording of Greek folksongs on Prestige International, whereon he is accompanied by Rolf Cahn and Susan Alevizos. Rolf Cahn and Eric Von Schmidt have an album on Folkways; those who have seen their live performances will be tempted to say the recording suffers from sobriety of one sort or another, but on the whole it is a fine recording...

Rapid Writer. Ned Buntline wrote hundreds of western and adventure tales. He could turn out a 610-page thriller in 62 hours-complete with such immortal lines as: "[Isabella] arose from the couch whereon she had been carelessly thrown . . ." He could ride and shoot like a Cody or a Hickock. When he was not dead drunk, he could spout a temperance speech that would awaken the remorse of the most sodden toper. When he was not in jail for fraud, slander, bigamy, libel or inciting to riot, he wrung women's hearts with his impassioned campaigns for purity. This...

...movement which has been fighting to overthrow the governor. The epilogue has little to do with the bulk of the novel, and it raises the disconcerting suspicion that Tabori meant Dr. Varga's story as some sort of significant parable. ...desperation, e.g., international threats of Communist treason. In Rome last week, when Premier De Gasperi announced his cabinet's decision to join the pact, a small mob of Communists in front of the Parliament building shouted, "Down with warmongers and wars!" and "There are pillars in Rome whereon to hang traitors!" They were joined by neo-Fascist youths (members of the Italian Social Movement). The neo-Fascists objected to the pact because it "betrayed the national interest," the Communists, because it served the national interest at the expense of Soviet Russia...

...Lives. At this time, the people's lives were hard and narrow. Reported a visitor: "The houses of the common people in Moscow usually consist only of one room . . . used for all purposes. ... In this room you encounter a large stove covered with boards . . . whereon sits almost all year round, the entire family. ..." Their pleasures were few. Muscovites, who were social drinkers, liked to gather in a korchma (wine tavern) but the taverns were owned by the Czar and rented out to nobles: Muscovites who could not pay for what they drank were held until their friends ransomed them...
