...Whether or not we choose to label Mary Cassatt a "modern woman," we can certainly call her a skilled and innovative painter who produced a uniquely emotional oeuvre. Like other Impressionists, Cassatt strove to capture scenes of modern life. Yet while her male counterparts often focused on working people, cityscapes or natural panoramas, Cassatt turned her eye to the private lives of her subjects. Concentrating her view on women and children, she presented their daily activities with remarkable tenderness and grace...
When the American Repertory Theatre puts up a show, whether it's Peter Pan or Bertolt Brecht, every scene feels like an existential dialogue in the dark. It's partly a function of the Loeb Mainstage itself and partly a function of A.R.T. sets which are too conceptual to bother setting the right time-of-day tone. This darkening affect is only a part of an A.R.T "feel" that touches almost every show they produce, and their most recent, Henrik Ibsen's The Master Builder, is no exception...
...ignore: Alicia Silverstone. No, guys, I'm not talking about her looks. I'm talking about her acting. As Adam's love interest, Eve is supposed to be a cynical woman disillusioned by love. Whether pretending to light a cigarette or making an appropriate facial expression, the performers were certainly into the piece. Classical ballet seemed to become one with line dancing in the livelier segments, and interspersed throughout the piece were beautiful duets performed to heart-wrenching country ballads...
Within just a few years, the Kong was an established success. Sen's partners came to him with a proposition. They wanted to buy him out. He considered his options and decided that it didn't make much difference to him whether he cleaned clothing or cooked chow mein. His wife, on the other hand, was less flexible. Paul reports, "My mother told him that if [he sold his interest] and went back to the laundry, she would stay home with the kids, and he could work there by himself." So, Sen went to the bank and took...
