...donor of the funds for the Ashkelon excavations in Israel, which Dr. Stager has directed for the past ten years, I have worked very closely with him and come to know him quite well. Neither I nor anyone else who has worked with him detected the slightest whiff of anti-Semitism in Larry's conduct in Israel or in the states. He is, in fact, admired and loved by Israelis from Teddy Kollek to the late Yigael Yadin, who helped Professor Stager obtain the permit to excavate at Ashkelon. Martin Peretz's implied comparison of Larry Stager with President Lowell...
...July celebration in 1905 attended by an old, sad-eyed Geronimo, by then something of a historical sideshow attraction. In flashbacks we see the education of a rebel, a young warrior who turns vengeful after his wife and baby are killed in a massacre by Mexican troops. A whiff of political correctness hangs over the show, as does some needlessly stilted dialogue ("The one who was my father has been gone from us many years"). There was always the whiff of the charlatan about John Cage. The puckish composer, audacious theoretician, stylish writer, subtle graphic artist, macrobiotic guru and fearless mushroom hunter was the impish personification of the 20th century avant-garde. And yet: Was there ever a composer of whom it can be said...
There's a whiff of ganja in the air as Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers take the stage of Manhattan's Academy theater under a backdrop of painted African masks. The band launches into a chugging Jamaican groove, and the young crowd that has filled the house churns and bobs to the buoyant, upside- down beat. Midway through the show the Melody Makers break into an impassioned rendition of the Bob Marley classic I Shot the Sheriff and then segue into the blistering grind of Head Top, from their strong new album Joy and Blues. As Ziggy, 24, rekindles...
...grandparent today. So despite its billing as "new," Tommy becomes that oddest of entities, a period rock musical -- playing to a nonperiod audience. Unimaginably to kids who boogied in the aisles at concert versions way back when, the Broadway crowd cheers while sitting sedately, and there isn't a whiff of controlled substances in the house...
