Neither revelry nor formal ceremonies will mark the canal's 100th anniversary. The silence along its banks will be broken only by the whine of bullets and the scream of attacking jets. Closed since the outbreak of the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, Suez today is a useless relic of what was once one of the world's busiest waterways that handled an average of 57 ships a day in 1966. Dug in on opposite banks, the Arabs and Israelis sometimes slip across the canal to launch raids. The canal thus even fails to fulfill its sole remaining function...

Most of the racket comes from automobiles, and most automobiles are small Volkswagens, assembled in Sāo Paulo. The whine of their four-cylinder engines and the beep of their horns are, at least to Brazilian ears, disappointingly meek. As a result, manufacturers of install-it-yourself kits do a booming business in noisemakers. Like some sunken Atlantis, a Middle West lurks in the collective unconscious of many Americans. In that Middle West the year is still 1930-something, the lawns are broad and sleek, locusts whine in the elms on summer afternoons. There are vacant lots suitable for baseball. Prosperous businessmen eat lunch together every day at the hotel grill, and their wives have card parties with small prizes-a vocabulary-building book or a piece of bone china. There are, of course, bad neighborhoods, some colored, some criminal; people with alien names; poor people (mostly lazy); and a dangerous President...

...power plants, at one point claimed to be opening a school classroom a day. But the roads led mainly to French industries, and the schools served mostly French children. Independence came in 1956. Now, under hard-working King Hassan II, Moroccans are still poor, but don't whine about it, and show no complex of inferiority. The nation is Arabic, but it permits full freedom of religion and takes a moderate stand in the Arab-Israeli conflict...
