...brazen effrontery, the medicalatrocity charge was the high point so far of the Reds' propaganda campaign. Such an accusation by them would have been unthinkable in the first weeks of the truce talks last summer, when the U.N. held the whip hand and once broke off the talks for several days over a mere matter of Communist soldiers strolling in Kaesong. Since then, the U.N.'s military pressure has slackened, and its anxiety for a truce has been openly publicized. Now, apparently, the Reds believe that anything goes-the U.N. will keep on coming to the truce table...

Guards Terry Quinn and Albert Allen admitted that they had dragged two boys behind a woodpile and taken turns lashing them with a fan belt. Even Superintendent Ridgway confessed he used the whip. And then, plunk in the middle of the snowy road, Driver Shearer saw a sight that chilled his spine: a cat, lazily sunning itself...
...House Committee on Foreign Affairs received merely a letter and press handouts from the department. When the resolution of inquiry came back to the floor, the House shouted down an attempt to drop it, instead set up a cry of protest about the conduct of U.S. foreign policy. G.O.P. Whip Charlie Halleck, scenting an upset, scurried around to line up votes. On a roll call, the House shattered custom by voting 189 (160 Republicans, 29 Democrats) to 143 to keep the resolution alive and formally to "direct" Dean Acheson to report...
