...singers but on the operagoers. Everyone gets to be a prima donna, or a spear carrier, in Altman's daring democracy. Not many directors would think to open a film with an elegant eight-minute tracking shot that brings dozens of characters together and introduces a whodunit teaser. Altman did it, and so much more, with The Player. He continued his innovations with film form in Short Cuts and Ready to Wear and the 2001 Gosford Park. By then, as happens to most pioneering artists, experiment had calcified into the format of "the Altman movie." But what the hell...

...tough to find a television market where CSI: Miami is not on the prime-time schedule. Although the two other shows in producer Jerry Bruckheimer's franchise--CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and CSI: New York--are also hits, the lush, exotic backdrop of Miami coupled with its high-tech whodunit forensics have made Miami the most popular TV drama on the planet. More than 40 million viewers a week tune in compared with 18 million in the U.S. It's Top 10 in most countries where it airs...

...wake of the assassination, as suspicions fall on a Syrian man, now President Cheney suspends most civil liberties and itches to invade Syria. To leftists, a government that grounds its policies in paranoia may not seem like fantasy. For others, there's fascination in the whodunit that Range weaves with his fictional talking heads from the Bush White House, the Chicago cops and the FBI. But the killer's ID takes a backseat to the infernal cleverness of the enterprise. D.O.A.P. has a surface plausibility as seductive as a good political campaign...

...whodunit? We'll get to that shortly. But first, the audience. TIFF audiences are among the most generous and enthusiastic in the world, but they gave Death of a President only lukewarm applause over the closing credits. They'd been so pumped up, I suspect, that the film itself almost had to be a letdown. Engrossing but not enthralling, Death of a President let the air out of its own balloon. It was hard not to be impressed by the expertise of the intercutting (archive footage, staged demonstrations and fictional interviews), by the seamlessness of the photo-realism and photoshopping...

...WHODUNIT BY ... WHO DAT? Apparently, leading a leftist revolution from the jungles of southern Mexico leaves plenty of time for literary pursuits. Zapatista spokesman SUBCOMANDANTE MARCOS has co-written a noir mystery novel, The Uncomfortable Dead, with Spanish crime author Paco Ignacio Taibo II. The story of detectives investigating a government-backed murderer, due in U.S. bookstores next month, isn't the masked rebel's first stab at fiction. In 1999, Marcos, a former professor who travels with a pet rooster, wrote a children's book, Story of the Colors. His new work is an effort to raise awareness...
