...Last week Ding and two other Tiananmen Mothers (one is actually a Tiananmen widow) were detained. Associates say they were planning to submit information to the U.N. High Commission on Human Rights in Geneva and were also making preparations for the 15th anniversary of the massacre. By Friday night all three had been released. China's official Xinhua news agency tersely stated that Ding had confessed that the women had "conspired with overseas forces to evade Chinese customs and import illegal goods to China ... and engaged in other activities in violation of China's State Security Law." Like the women's-rights movement she has helped lead since the 1970S, Gloria Steinem has come a long way. Proudly single until four years ago, when she married environmentalist David Bale, she became a widow in December when he died of brain lymphoma. TIME's Sonja Steptoe talked with Steinem, who turned 70 last week, and found her just as engaged as ever...
...bass baritone--level standards of public decency, COURTNEY LOVE has sunk to a new low. On Late Show with David Letterman last week, the singer-actress babbled about drug charges she faces and repeatedly bared her bosoms. Love's publicist says, "She will be vindicated." The only person to profit from the display was Whitney Houston, whose entry into rehab earlier in the week was soon forgotten...

A clubfooted widow, Madame Souza, trains her chubby grandson Champion to become a stick-thin cyclist with the help of bulky canine Bruno and her restless whistle. One day, Champion is mysteriously kidnapped, along with two of his fellow Tour de France riders, by amusingly ominous members of the French mafia. In hot pursuit...
DIED. MARGE SCHOTT, 75, controversial philanthropist and former owner of the Cincinnati Reds; in Cincinnati, Ohio. As a wealthy widow, Schott bought the baseball team in 1984, but she knew little about the sport; she once settled a contract dispute by flipping a coin. Reds executives accused her of using racial and ethnic slurs. In a 1992 interview she said, "Hitler was good in the beginning, but he went too far." Several similarly offensive comments followed, and in 1999, under pressure from the team's limited partners, Schott sold her controlling interest. To many in the city she remained beloved...
