...Verwoerd the unkindest cut of all was from his own Nederduits Gere formmeerde Kerk (Afrikaans for Dutch Reformed Church), which has always taken the pro-Afrikaner view in all his disputes. It said that it could not support the "width of impact of the church clause." At the church's Stellenbosch Seminary, Theology Professor B. B. Keet, a blunt Afrikaner, spelled out what may prove the turn of the tide in South Africa's official segregation policy. "It will be suicidal," said Keet, "for the white group in South Africa to continue to try to apply the impractical...
...lighter side of Dumbarton Oaks is the gardens surrounding it. The part of the property owned by Harvard covers nearly two city blocks in width and extends over a mile in length. The grounds run from Georgetown, the oldest section of Washington, to the newer but equally plush Embassy Row on Massachusetts Avenue. The grounds around the main building, which houses the library, museum, and study rooms, are covered with the most beautiful formal gardens in Washington. Not an American Versailles, Dumbarton Oaks, with its fountains, box hedges, and old shade trees, does manage to retain an aristocratic aura...
Gophers have dirty teeth, yellow bottoms, and thirteen stripes of a width-wise sort. They dig holes that trip cattle and eat grain, which aggravates farmers. (The Atheneum was unable to borrow the actual painting from the Yale University Art Gallery, but it did exhibit a later version.) In only 30 inches of width, Yale's picture contains 48 portrait figures, all grouped naturally and convincingly in a manner suited to the solemn occasion. Among them, at the table before John Hancock, stand John Adams, Roger Sherman. Robert R. Livingston, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin. The painting is a set piece, but Trumbull succeeded in conveying...
...word is spoken once the robbery is under way. Moving into an apartment above the store, they bind and gag the concierge and his wife, roll back the living-room rug and begin cutting through the concrete floor. When the hole is the width of a man's wrist, an umbrella is lowered through it and opened to catch the fragments of plaster as the gap is widened. Once in the store, the alarm is swiftly disconnected, the safe opened with an electric drill, and the loot removed. The entire operation simulates major surgery: there is the same mute...
