...major Democratic campaign managers are men. Of the other women advisors apparently only two press secretaries, Maxine Isaacs for Walter Mondale and Kathy Bushkin for Gary Hart, wield any real influence. Similarly for the 'consultants" and other heavyweights who gravitate around campaigns: They are mostly men and this augurs ill for women's hopes in a Democratic cabinet...

...size of this pool and thus the power that the money managers wield have grown prodigiously. In 1950 pension funds held $17 billion. Today they are a $1 trillion treasure trove. By 1995 the total is expected to reach $3 trillion. Through these funds, some 60 million Americans own about 30% of all the equity capital in U.S. corporations. That makes a mockery of Karl Marx's prediction that capitalism would end in revolution as fewer and fewer people owned the means of production...

Daniel Ortega Saavedra, head of Nicaragua's junta, charged last week that the U.S. is preparing to manufacture a provocation that would justify an invasion. The revitalization of a Central American defense alliance known as CONDECA might serve as the vehicle to launch an American attack. The military chiefs of El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala secretly met with the head of the U.S. Southern Command a month ago in Guatemala...

...city of Amritsar is a sacred place, and its holiest sanctuary is the Golden Temple, a resplendent 72-acre compound that is known to the faithful as the City of Joy. These days it more closely resembles a city of death. Inside the temple compound, fierce Sikh warriors wield submachine guns, guarding against encroachment by government security forces. Outside, the security men keep a nervous vigil, all too aware that the bodies of murdered comrades often turn up in the warren of tiny streets around the shrine...
