The episode ends ludicrously: as Brownshirts riot around Innitzer's palace, Soprano Wilma Lipp and 200 members of the Wiener Jeunesse Choir huddle primly in the plaza, singing Mozart's Alleluia without skipping a half note. Schumann. Spanische Liebeslieder (Columbia). These love songs are about as Spanish as wiener schnitzel, but romantic nonetheless. Published posthumously, the five solos, two duets and final quartet of Schumann's second Spanish-cycle are recorded for the first time. The two-piano team of Arthur Gold and Robert Fizdale share high honors with the singers, notably Soprano Lois Marshall and Tenor Leopold Simoneau. On the other side of the record are Brahms's Liebeslieder Waltzes, which are also written for four hands and four voices...
Beethoven: Christ on the Mount of Olives (Jan Peerce, Maria Stader and Otto Wiener, soloists; the Vienna Academy Chorus and State Opera Orchestra conducted by Hermann Scherchen; Westminster). Put a few dozen voices anywhere under a choral director and they're apt to belt out the rousing final chorus of this oratorio; but its starkly eloquent arias are seldom heard. Singing Beethoven's Jesus, Tenor Peerce builds to a marvelous anguish, which unfortunately tends to increase when he is coping with high notes...
