...early reviews of Hamlet 2 make it seem like a wild anarchic satire. It is nothing of the sort. It's a standard-issue parody of the inspirational-teacher movies that bloomed in the '90s (with Mr. Holland's Opus and Dangerous Minds) and show no signs of going away. Satire's aim is to cleanse by annihilating; that's what Dr. Strangelove and other black comedies of the '60s did. But genuine satire is hard to find on the big screen these days, or any day, because its strident moralist tone tends to alienate audiences. In the definition...

...around, you never know what you'll find. Case in point: I was walking outside of the table tennis venue at Peking University this week when I saw this sign - "Gluing Tent." Actually, I smelled it before I saw it - that sweetly sharp, pungent odor of Elmer's gone wild. With fond memories of those grade school glue highs, I popped in, hoping for a much-needed week two lift, and maybe some bonding moments with a few fellow sniffers, and saw a long table, a dozen or so chairs and one very happy volunteer. ...respect everybody else, go to couples therapy. If I'm going to spend two weeks watching something, I want to see some people pouring Champagne on one another and some people crying at the end of it. That's why I watch the baseball playoffs and Girls Gone Wild. How damaging to sports is the Olympic spirit? After all these events, I have no idea who won. Sure, NBC sometimes flashes a "medal count," but that is the stupidest way of measuring victory since the Electoral College. Gold, silver and bronze all count as one point? Then why make different...

...might have seemed like patriotism gone wild when two members of Georgia's men's beach-volleyball team stitched the nicknames "Geor" and "Gia" onto their uniforms, spelling out the name of their team's besieged nation. But there's a twist: neither of the players is Georgian by birth - 2.04-m Renato Gomes and 1.92-m Jorge Terceiro are towering Brazilian imports recruited by Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili for the sole purpose of playing for his country in the Olympics...
