Punk pioneer Iggy Pop. Legendary bad actress Susan Tyrrell. Norman Mailer's son Stephen. As a smarmily sadistic guard, Willem Dafoe. The parents of slutty Wanda (Traci Lords) are assayed by Ozzie and Harriet's own David Nelson and, in her movie debut, Patricia Hearst. The mind wanders: Is this the first time in Hollywood history that a famous abducted heiress has played mother to a famous underage porn princess...

...discovered hoops in the seventh grade. "It was the game I could play," he says. And how. Pete was a dervish guard at Liberty High School, leading the team to consecutive 24-3 records. That earned him a place at nearby Lafayette College, where a raffish free spirit named Willem van Breda Kolff came to coach and inherited Pete, then in his senior year. Although the changes he has made are still largely cosmetic...

While he modeled himself on his stern and unyielding father, his brother Willem, 61, who became a journalist and a vocal critic of apartheid, took after their more moderate mother. F.W., says his brother, "was always part of the Establishment, always a conformist...

...little of that dreadful impact comes across in the film, which is too respectful of its subject to find more in it than noble cliches. Salamo Arouch (Willem Dafoe), formerly the Balkan middleweight champ, is interned with his family at Birkenau and soon ordered to take part in boxing exhibitions in which the loser will almost certainly be killed. This grisly dilemma -- each of Arouch's knockouts sends his opponent to the gas chamber -- is mostly evaded in Robert M. Young's bland direction. The film's only and considerable virtue lies in its documentation of the desperate strategies people...
