...invented with Georges Braque--beget. The exception, since Picasso never painted an abstract picture in his life, was abstract art; but even there his handprints lay everywhere--one obvious example being his effect on the early work of American Abstract Expressionist painters, Arshile Gorky, Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, among others...
Close, when a student at Yale, was enraptured by the work of the Abstract Expressionist Willem de Kooning: he loved his color and luscious paint surface, while realizing that they couldn't possibly be imitated. Imitating de Kooning was the bane of student existence: no originality could come of it. But Close, in his ruminative way, hankered after the paradise of the senses that de Kooning's touch represented, and it surfaces in the work that he had begun to do just before his paralysis in 1989 and was able to develop after his partial recovery. The dots and pixels...
...senior year I controlled my clicker. I also had new ideas about the organization of my personal space. Avidly interested in art history at the time, I went for a minimalist, art gallery look. I threw out all my Van Gogh and Monet posters and went with Willem De Kooning, Roy Lichtenstein and Andrew Wyeth. I read up on feng shui, the ancient Chinese philosophy for creating harmonious environments and then tried to incorporate mirrors, crystals and running water into my living space. In my own way, I tried to bring out the feng shui ideals of Balance, Harmony...
...collection begins with a fragment from 1923 that is among the earliest known surviving symphony-broadcast recordings. At first its sound seems irritatingly thin and scratchy, but as the listener's ears adapt, the focus turns to Willem van Hoogstraten's white-hot, meticulously sculpted rendering of most of Beethoven's Coriolanus overture; the level of orchestral precision is breathtaking. Even more remarkable is Willem Mengelberg's spellbinding presentation in 1924 of two fragments from Richard Strauss's Death and Transfiguration. Mengelberg achieves an almost spiritual intimacy in the work's tender, meditative broodings and a radiant beauty...
...Diebenkorn enrolled at the California School of Fine Arts. Over the next several years, he moved between the East and West coasts. His work from the late '40s to the early '50s was essentially abstract, though with strong overtones of landscape space and color. A considerable influence of Willem de Kooning bore on it. De Kooning, Diebenkorn felt, "had it all, could outpaint anybody, at least until the mid-'60s, when he began to lose it." But Diebenkorn's friendship with the Bay Area painter David Park, who bravely refused to accept the reigning dictum in the American avant-garde...
