Ironically, when tackling the subject of recognizing people for good work, the three very different CEOs all fall back on corny ploys. Joie de Vivre's Conley quotes philosopher William James: "The deepest hunger in humans is the desire to be appreciated." He says he has given away "dozens and dozens of copies" of the children's book The Little Engine That Could to his employees. Writes Conley: "The fact that a room attendant is given this book personally by the company's CEO, with a customized inscription inside, makes the recognition all the sweeter." Likewise, Kilts believes...

...nativist time like ours, it's hard to imagine a national effort so peopled by foreigners--German expat Wernher von Braun building our rockets, New Zealand immigrant William Pickering heading our unmanned program. In a time of flash-paper attention spans, it's similarly hard to picture any agency surviving the setbacks NASA did. Like Hirsch, most of the actors play against type. For example, Hurt portrays an abusive husband, and funny-man Vaughn is a mundane grain farmer. Like something out of an IMAX movie, the sweeping shots of natural vistas in the film...

...McCandless (Emile Hirsch) graduated from Emory University in 1992 and decided he needed a little time to himself before joining the bourgeois lockstep. It is a little difficult to see what's bugging him. His father (William Hurt) is a successful, self-made businessman, who is perhaps a little too sternly conventional in his views. His mother (Marcia Gay Harden) is a perhaps a little too softly so and, yes, there are strains in their marriage. But they are scarcely monsters, and the values they represent, though stodgy, are not exactly oppressive. Plenty of young people have slithered through...
