Even if he does not get the hardware, Sadat will count the visit a success. "All in all," reported TIME Correspondent Wilton Wynn from Cairo, "the trip is viewed from here as further evidence that Sadat's policy of moderation and seeking the closest of ties with the U.S. has been vindicated...

...exist, the Palestinians now realize they risk losing the support of oil-rich Arab states if they do not soften their position. Wearing his usual cartridge belt and revolver, an unshaven Arafat outlined his opinions in an interview with TIME'S Chief of Correspondents Murray Gart and Correspondent Wilton Wynn in Beirut before taking off for the Afro-Arab summit in Cairo. Jordan's King Hussein, 41, has an unforgiving memory. Interviewed by TIME Correspondent Wilton Wynn last week in Amman's Raghadan Palace, Hussein was smiling and relaxed through most of their conversation. His mood darkened only once, when talk turned to the possibility of Palestinian guerrillas ever again operating from Jordan against Israel. In a 90-minute interview in Damascus with TIME's Wilton Wynn last week, he outlined his views on terms and timing of a settlement, on Palestinian participation, and on the need for the U.S. to be still more evenhanded in its Middle East dealings. Excerpts from the interview...

Caustic Remarks. Yamani did not even bother to attend the final session in the conference hall. Instead, smiling and gracious, he invited TIME Correspondent Wilton Wynn and a handful of other reporters to his tenth-floor suite. There, in equable tones, he delivered some surprisingly caustic remarks about his OPEC colleagues. How did he feel about breaking ranks? "Is it fair for all OPEC to get together to decide the price of Saudi crude? Is it fair for others to decide against our will?" What about OPEC arguments that a big oil hike is justified by inflation in the prices...
