...livestock, and easy credit, a.k.a., New Haven. It’s long past time for some unserious reflection. Look, for example, to the charges brought against About Hair, a shady Arrow Street salon accused of providing prostitution services to students and other local residents (a sign in the front window of the establishment displayed a sign for “Student Discounts”). We were appalled to find out that About Hair is accused of being a house of ill-repute. But we were even more appalled that the place got busted before we could complete...
...FOUR O'CLOCK, AN ESCAPED CONVICT bought a pair of Bushnell binoculars just up Main Street at York Arms Company, one of the businesses whose windows were smashed on March 28. He drove back to finish setting up a surveillance post. The convict had driven from Atlanta, where the newspapers said King was leaving for a march in Memphis, arriving late the previous night. Ratzinger, says a top aide to a progressive European Cardinal, "has a brilliant way of summing up a concept in a single sentence. He can clean off the window of modern history, and give you a clear vision of what's wrong with our society." The new Pope's mission is the same one that has driven him since he was ordained in his native Bavaria. But Ratzinger's essential beliefs were rarely seen more clearly than during...
...Southwest, I mourn my life in New Orleans. When I returned a few weekends ago to see whether I could salvage anything from home, I spent some time in the French Quarter, where I used to teach. As I walked by the Little Red Schoolhouse, I looked in the window of my classroom and could see my students' unfinished work still hanging inside. That is how I feel about our lives in New Orleans: so much is left unfinished. Let us all hope that America steps up to help the Gulf Coast area in its days, months and years...
