...MIAMI In its seventh year, the South Beach Wine and Food Festival in Miami (Feb. 21-24) guarantees glamour and warm winter sunshine. Headline chefs for 2008 include Anthony Bourdain, whose revelatory tales of the kitchen have made him a star, and Alice Waters, the founder of Chez Panisse in Berkeley. One tribute evening honors Alsatian chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, another celebrates great women chefs such as Suzanne Goin of Luques in Los Angeles, and the grand finale is a Tuscan evening hosted by Jamie Oliver and Mario Batali. www.sobewineandfoodfest.com...

Working in a war zone can be draining, with places to alleviate the tension hard to find. In Kabul, NGO staff, journalists, and foreign development workers have long sought out L'Atmosphère Restaurant and Bar, latmospherekabul.blogs.com, for its convivial charms, excellent wine list (for Afghanistan) and comforting French meals - think dishes like beef fillet, smoked salmon and dill sauce or tuna steak and ratatouille followed by plates of cheese and fresh peaches in zabaglione...

Something has changed in the world of Sam Beam, the bearded Floridian who goes by the moniker Iron & Wine: Where once was a hushed grandeur, a well-oiled beast has let out a hollow howl. Beam’s previous solo LPs (2002’s “The Creek Drank the Cradle” and 2004’s “Our Endless Numbered Days”) glowed with disarming, whispered proximity. While these full-lengths and a few interspersed EPs have found his homespun aesthetic—all tape hum and endearing errors—buried...
