...time Oprah Winfrey announced publicly on Sept. 19 that her club's newest title would be The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, a book about a mute boy and his dogs by a first-time novelist - albeit a critical darling - its publisher had already ordered 750,000 "Oprah versions" from the printers. Boxes of these freshly minted tomes, with the Oprah's Book Club seal affixed to the covers - and a unique ISBN number to ensure accurate tracking of sales - were already on their way to bookstores across the country. The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, by software designer David Wroblewski, debuted...
...suit, a tax-and-spend liberal, an arugula-grazing élitist and a corrupt ward heeler, but the attacks that nearly derailed him involved the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, attacks designed to portray Obama as an angry black man. White America has embraced unthreatening African Americans like Tiger Woods, Oprah Winfrey, Will Smith and Colin Powell, but this is still a majority-white country, and Obama does not want to be stereotyped as a race man like Malcolm X. In a media climate in which "working class" and "small town" and "ordinary" voters still mean white voters, angry white candidates...
...White America has shown an abundant willingness to support no-demands blacks like Tiger Woods, Oprah Winfrey, Colin Powell and Will Smith, but a race man like Malcolm X would be another story. It was no accident that Bill Clinton tried to pigeonhole Obama in the primaries as another Jesse Jackson, or that Michelle Obama introduced her family at the convention as a new version of the Cosbys (or the Bradys). Obama's opponents want him to look niche, like BET or Chris Rock or the NBA; his challenge is to prove that he's also attractive...
Take the manufactured Oprah-Palin controversy. Oprah Winfrey endorsed Obama in 2007 and said she would not have him or any other candidates on her show again until after the election. The Drudge Report ran a story that Oprah had "banned" Palin, although 1) Oprah had also de facto "banned" McCain, Joe Biden and Obama, and 2) it's uncertain that Palin even wanted to be interviewed by Obama's most famous backer. Nonetheless, it became a big story. Tom Brokaw asked whether Oprah's decision was "élitist," probably the first and last time the term will ever...
...invested a lifetime in the politics of black identity. Obama's success, whether it culminates in the White House or not, signals the passing of their era. So it is no wonder that younger voters have been key to his candidacy. Having grown up in the era of Oprah Winfrey, Denzel Washington, Tiger Woods and, yes, Henry Louis Gates Jr., they are better able to credit Obama's thesis that "there's not a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America; there's the United States of America...
