...movie - with Mary, Precious and a social worker played by a makeup-free Mariah Carey (who should work for Daniels every chance she gets) - is as powerful as anything on film this year. (Look for other stealth casting, including Lenny Kravitz and Sherri Shepherd.) Because Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry are executive producers, you might expect the sort of classic inspirational arc they both favor. But Winfrey and Perry aren't the creative forces behind the movie. They're just getting the word out, and Precious is not so much a see-how-far-she's-come tale...

...father - broke records in a very limited opening; this week it took in $6.1 million at just 174 theaters for a wowie-zowie $35,000 per screen. That's how Paranormal Activity started out. Fervently promoted by Tyler Perry (who brought the movie to his distributor, Lionsgate) and Oprah Winfrey, with a plug from George H.W. As for Precious, $100,000 a screen is a feat accomplished only twice before (by Dreamgirls and Brokeback Mountain), but the movie had enormous promotion from executive producer Oprah Winfrey to complement its sheaf of enthusiastic reviews. Then again, it's the rare indie movie that, over its entire run, can gross as much as $31 million - the "disappointing" amount Disney's A Christmas Carol will have earned in its first three days...

...Winfrey is keeping the focus on the story that first inspired her to sign on to the project. "None of us who sees the movie can now walk through the world and allow the Preciouses of the world to be invisible," Winfrey told reporters in Toronto. But few things on earth are as precious as an Oprah Winfrey endorsement, and that's the X factor that is bound to have Hollywood insiders talking throughout the winter, wondering just how far this one woman can take an independent film - and how they can convince her to do the same for them...
