...biggest, almost the fastest land transport plane in the U. S. It has a wingspan of 138 ft. 3 in., overall length of 97 ft. Nearly three times as heavy as the familiar DC-3, which is at present the favorite transport of all U. S. airlines, DC-4 will carry 42 passengers as a day plane, 30 passengers as a sleeper. ...next week is really the fourth DC-4. First was a "mock-up"-a full-sized wooden replica, exact in every detail, for a study of space requirements, load placement, general structure. DC-4 No. 2 was a perfect scale model, with 8 ft. 3 in. wingspan. This Lilliputian transport "flew" through 1,100 hours and $25,000 worth of wind tunnel tests at the Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory at Caltech. Third stage was a Spanish Inquisition by Douglas engineers, who systematically squeezed, banged, shook, stretched, heated, froze, destroyed every part, every material. They built huge testing machines many times...

Built with great secrecy at a cost of $120,000, Hughes's low-wing monoplane is equipped with a tremendous Wasp motor, a fuselage longer than the wingspan, a curious stilt-like landing gear which folds during flight. For two days Pilot Hughes had driven this big racer over the Santa Ana course. The first day he broke the landplane record with ease, lost the credit for it because of a technicality. The second day, he fulfilled all the requirements, had nearly finished when the mishap occurred. As he bent to inspect the damage, exuberant timers announced...

...Northrop Gamma could fly this distance in 15 min. Roscoe Turner in his Wedell-Williams could fly it in less. But last week it was news when a plane called Miss Philadelphia IV flew from Camden to Middletown in 2 hr. 35 min. Miss Philadelphia IV has a wingspan of 6 ft. 1 in., a fuel capacity of 13 oz., a tiny one-cylinder Brown engine. Followed by a full-sized plane from take-off to landing she climbed 8,000 ft., glided 10 mi. in descending circles after her fuel gave out, made a neat three-point landing...
