...economy to its current world-beating performance. The strongest economy in the world is as strong as it has ever been. But as the brutal tale of the Potomac mines illustrates, this prosperity is not about abundance but about taking bigger risks with smaller margins in a winner-take-all competition. This is a story about pennies--about how a difference of cents on a ton of coal in a local bidding war can imperil a small town in West Virginia's eastern panhandle...

Trail Fever is not without flaws. His magazine editor pared Lewis' endless Morry Taylor stories; his book editor should have too. At times Lewis also talks too much about himself, preening when he should be prying. Still, Trail Fever is a winner, proving, as the author writes, that "if you look long and hard enough at ugliness, you often find real beauty...

...Jean-Marie Le Pen laughing? Because the truculent, acid-tongued far-right leader sees himself as the real winner of France's parliamentary elections. The snap vote, called by Gaullist President Jacques Chirac in a disastrous blunder, not only ousted a center-right majority that Le Pen reviles, it also vastly increased the clout of Le Pen's anti-immigrant National Front, which polled nearly 15% in the first round of voting and played a decisive role in the June 1 runoff. Masayuki Suo's romantic comedy, the winner of 13 Japanese Academy Awards, at times teeters dangerously close to the excesses of another Miramax crowd pleaser, Strictly Ballroom. ...that just a month ago, neither seemed possible. MAYOR KANE DITTO was the easy favorite to win a third term, but in a six-way race, the white two-term incumbent was trounced by HARVEY JOHNSON, a 50-year-old black urban planner. Johnson must now defeat G.O.P. primary winner CHARLOTTE REEVES. (A third and distant candidate is independent Ivory Phillips, a black woman.) The other wonder of this election is that though Jackson has a black majority, race has not been a dominant factor. Reeves, a white woman, handily defeated black civil rights activist James Meredith in the G.O.P...
