...success - has actually succeeded in keeping, until the time of issuing the first number, a new year's resolution, to dress old jokes in new costume. Well done, Lampy. Serve a few of prae-Adamite cold dishes, kept in your frigid zone, with new year's sauce, and win our most hearty thanks...

...work of the hardest kind, and not by loafing. As it is Columbia will probably have learned something from her defeat last year, and will put a faster crew than ever on the water, so that the freshmen have got to brace more than usual if they wish to win. If eighty-nine wants an example to follow, let her take last year's University crew, a crew which probably worked harder and accomplished more than any crew Harvard has ever put on the water before...

The Spectator very rightly says: "A reliance upon skill and strength, however, will be found to be more useful than precedent when they come to start next June." We believe that the freshmen can produce a crew capable of scoring a victory over Columbia, if they are willing...

...print the challenge of our freshmen to the Harvard freshmen, that they row a two-mile race next year at New London. Having done this, they have really pledged themselves to their college to spare neither work nor time in doing everything that will enhance their chances of winning this race. '85 and '87 both won their freshman races, and, if there is anything in precedent, '89 should win next year. A reliance upon skill and strength, however, will be found to be more useful than precedent when they come to the start next June, and it is the duty...
