...assume Pippa has coasted through life on not much more than her beauty. The Lees' adult daughter, photojournalist Grace (Zoe Kazan), is crazy about her daddy, but when she directs her attention at her mother it's usually to give her a scathing look. Pippa's neurotic friend Sandra (Winona Ryder) chafing under her own marriage to the overbearing Sam, describes Pippa as "peaceful and good," ostensibly with admiration, but the undercurrent is "you're complacent and boring." First up is Spock (Zachary Quinto, a slightly sexier version of Leonard Nimoy), who was bullied on Vulcan for having a human mother (Winona Ryder, seemingly still in character and costume from a Grey Gardens audition) and chose to take refuge in the Starfleet Academy. Then comes Uhura (Zoe Saldana), who rejects Kirk's leering come-on with just the crisp efficiency you'd expect...

Lily, for one, is glad that it's the therapy she did try. One of her favorite films used to be James Mangold's 1999 adaptation of Girl, Interrupted, in which Winona Ryder plays a real-life borderline author. When Ryder's character learns she has received a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder, she indignantly asks, "Borderline between what and what?" It's a question that weighed on Lily for years and one that many of us may start asking if borderline diagnoses continue to increase. But today Lily is able to laugh about the film because she knows, finally...
