Over 250 athletes were assembled inside the Stadium. Football, crew, baseball, track lacrosse, soccer, and tennis stopped at 4.15 o'clock to enable all to attend. "If the nation does not train young college men, it will be left with no adequate defense", said Colonel Winship. "Congress has so cut down on the reserve corps that we absolutely must get support for our project. ...Colonel Winship has a brilliant war record, going to France shortly after the declaration of war, serving on General Pershing's Staff, and subsequently commanding two different regiments in major engagements.
