That's right: there's a company for every five residents in quaint little Zug and the compact canton that surrounds it. These companies' executives are no doubt impressed by the same attractions that lure tourists in summer and winter alike: the town's spectacular lakeside setting with the Alps towering in the distance. But there are also good business reasons to set up shop in Zug. It offers some of the lowest tax rates available in any stable democracy. And its laws protecting residents' financial privacy are among the strictest on the planet...
...it’s far from novel, a fact highlighted by a story structure and cinematic style not unlike many other Santa flicks. Director David Dobkin introduces us to the North Pole in a way that we’ve seen before. A crane shot of an elfin winter wonderland is followed by clips of elves working in Santa’s factory, followed by scenes of elves shopping in the town square—all set to the tune of sleigh bell-heavy music. This time around, though, our first view of the ideal Santa-land is bathetic?...
...Since winter can be long and dreary, when days are short and the sunlight thin, we rely on the revelry of carnival and Mardi Gras to carry us over until spring and rebirth. Then come the patriotic plumes, of Memorial Day and Flag Day and July 4 (not to mention Cinco de Mayo, Bastille Day and Samoan Independence Day) before a long spell when the holidays themselves go on holiday. August is the rare month with no shared celebration in it, when we gasp along for weeks on end without collective permission to overspend, overeat and overindulge...
...about the roofs of most city buildings is that you don't have to look at them much. That's very good, since an urban landscape viewed from above can be an unlovely thing--block after block of tarred black rooftops, sticky in the summer, windswept in the winter, ugly year-round. Or at least that's the way it used...
This is fine for the summer, during which post-work walks or scrimmages actually take place. It’s stupid, however, for the winter, when people who have to rise early would need to spend an extra hour in the cold and dark pre-dawn. Privileging the late-risers for the entire year (by doing away with the recent switch back to Standard) would be wrong...
