His father thought otherwise, declined an opportunity to invest in it. failed to share in the $1,000,000 the operetta reputedly earned. The theatre finally claimed him in 1004, first Boston's Castle Square, then Manhattan's ambitious, repertory New Theatre. He built the Little and Booth Theatres, headed a producers' committee to purge the stage of filth, helped rescue Gilbert and Sullivan operetta from the hands of school children...
