Usage:

...adjectives used to describe the Houses promote stereotypes and are insufficient to convey the variety of experiences people have in their house. Winthrop residents would probably have preferred "crowded" to any other description of their three-year home by the Charles. But it wasn't on the list. Also, isn't an athlete likely to describe his House as "athletic," or an artist as "artistic," no matter what other people think? Finally, who knows whether a certain House is "civilized" or "distinctive" or "stimulating"? I don't, and so I didn't check those descriptions...

Three students in February brought a complaint about Winthrop Professor of History Stephan A. Thernstrom to the Committee on Race Relations, a non-disciplinary, advisory body of the College. In response, Spence read his brief statement on academic freedom to the full Faculty at its March meeting. The students then met with Thernstrom and gave him a written statement of their complaints about his portion of Historical Study A-25, "The Peopling of America," which he co-taught with Adams University Professor Bernard Bailyn...

...There is a long tradition of the Choate fellow at Harvard," says Taylor. The Choate fellow has lived in the same Winthrop House suite since the House system began, Taylor says. The room contains a bureau--which is more than 50 years old--with a plaque on it which says, "rooms of the Choate fellow, 37 Weld Hall, ex bono Harvard Club of New York 1935."
