...that a discreet life cycle exists. The recently-published Grant study of the lives of men who went to Harvard, as well as other work in the rapidly-expanding field of life history, support Levinson's idea of the life cycle. And, as so often happens, the common sense wisdom of the ages does too, although no one fully realized it until a systematic, scientific study like Levinson's pointed it out. The Greek scholars, Confucius, the Bible, Shakespeare all speak explicitly of the seasons of a man's life, although they are not as precise as to the dates...

...ever heard of voters demanding a smaller tax cut than the President wants to give them? The Congressmen who are now debating Jimmy Carter's tax package, that's who. They are getting a message from the folks back home that defies all conventional political wisdom. Its essence: voters are so frightened by inflation that they are against anything that might make it worse−including cuts in their own taxes that would swell the federal budget deficit. Premier Menachem Begin called the operation "a big political success" and declared that UNIFIL will become "a buffer force between Israel and the terrorists, and will force the terrorists to restrict their operations." Some of his colleagues disagree. At last week's Cabinet meeting, several ministers asked angry questions about Israel's use of American-made cluster bombs in Lebanon in violation of a 1976 commitment to the U.S. that the weapons would be used only against armies in the event of full-scale...

...students, we find the proposed core curriculum unpleasant and unappetizing. Perhaps the most offensive aspect of the proposal is the assumption that the Harvard Faculty, in its collective wisdom, is entitled to define a well-rounded student. We would like to propose a small test for Dean Rosovsky, Professor of Government Stanley H. Hoffmann, and any other self-proclaimed "Renaissance men" who support the core curriculum. We suggest that sample final examinations be composed for each of the proposed core courses, and that these examinations be administered to all those harbingers of the "new era in undergraduate education." The completed...
