Joel Stein's wisecrack about Smith College and field hockey was a cheap shot either at women's colleges, sexual preference or the sport [Sept. 1]. It wasn't funny. It was also wrong. Field hockey is largely a male sport internationally, and if Stein had tuned in to any of the Olympic matches, he would have seen jaw-dropping displays of athleticism and speed. Stein should have gone after beach volleyball. Elizabeth Hoffman, HUMMELSTOWN...
...great silent comedians. And there was a lot of it in Maxwell Smart, the doofus, inanely self-confident secret agent Don Adams played in Get Smart, the iconic 1960s television series in which Mel Brooks and Buck Henry started satirizing James Bond almost before he made his first smirking wisecrack to Miss Moneypenny. One dared wanly to hope that the loose, slightly impoverished air of that funny, curiously memorable little enterprise might somehow prevail in our era of more grandiose imagery...
...whatever further sequels Lucas has in mind. LaBeouf, an intelligent actor without an ounce of charisma, will be hard put to replace the original, iconic Indy. Ford looks just fine, his chest tanned to a rich, Corinthian leather; he is still lithe on his feet and can deliver a wisecrack as sharp as a whip crack. Ford looks just fine, his chest skin tanned to a rich Corinthian leather; he's still lithe on his feet, and can deliver a wisecrack as sharp as a whipcrack. Karen Allen, 56, who was Indy's saucy love Marion Ravenwood in Raiders, still has that glittering smile and vestiges of her old elfin swagger. They needn't break a sweat keeping up with the (relative) kids: 39-year-old Cate Blanchett, the movie's villainess...
...write material for himself on his own show. A Writers Guild spokesman told TIME that the hosts (who are also members of AFTRA, the union representing performers) are free to perform on their shows, but not to write material for themselves. Of course, the question of whether a wisecrack that Conan or Dave thinks up in advance should be regarded as written material or an ad-lib could be the subject of unending philosophical debate...
