...small claims court. With that Donald Toner asked Attorney James Throwe to fight the claim-and Throwe simply released the story of the suit to the local papers. Embarrassed, Connecticut Governor Ella Grasso last week deplored the incident as "unfortunate and regrettable" and asked the department of transportation to withdraw the suit. As Mrs. Grasso observed, "There are circumstances when mercy tempers justice, and this is one." Reluctantly, the department complied-not out of any sense of mercy, its attorney explained, but because the suit was filed against Mrs. Toner rather than against her estate. Final score, as usual: Bureaucracy...
Since Begin's upset election two months ago, Washington has become increasingly alarmed over his intransigent views. Begin has said that he sees "no condition" under which Israel would withdraw to its 1967 borders, especially from the West Bank, or accept a Palestinian state involving the West Bank or the Gaza Strip. Moshe Dayan, hero of the Six-Day War and now Begin's Foreign Minister, last week flatly rejected what he called "partition" of the West Bank. But diplomats here speculate that France will withdraw entirely if a major struggle erupts over Djibouti, rather than risk involvement in a Red Sea war. Djibouti's domestic deterrent force-600 soldiers, 1,500 border guards and 1,000 gendarmes-is hardly able to handle an invasion. If one develops, Djiboutians might be best advised simply...
...majority of the holes are doglegs and the Bermuda grass rough has been treated with a growth-inducing acid that makes it almost impossible to extricate a stray shot. In fact, Hogan had to withdraw from the 1958 Open at Southern Hills after injuring his wrist while slashing out of the rough. The finely powdered sand in the bunkers also makes accuracy a necessity. Instead of rough quarry sand, the bunkers contain sand known as "Number Six Wash" extracted from the bottom of the Arkansas River...
