...Kunzru is as adaptable as his protean protagonist, effortlessly evoking a lush Indian landscape and a romantic Oxford, switching from wit to weight without misstep. But something is lacking. Kunzru's hero has identities to spare but no soul, and in the end he crumbles away. Kunzru's writing suffers similarly: it is the work of a brilliant literary impressionist who hits every symbol, fulfills every gesture, while missing something essential beneath the shining surface. Perhaps he knows this. "In between each impression," Kunzru writes, "just at the moment when one person falls away and the next...

Unfortunately, the weakening of Todd also makes the character at times incongruous and, worse, uninteresting. The text too often calls for him to use wit, intelligence and logic, making it unbelievable that he could so deftly educate Anthony in wigmaking, arrange his daughter’s rescue from bedlam and lure the judge to his death chamber. Margo is even prevented from enjoying the brilliant humor in an abbreviated “A Little Priest...

Obi-Wan, in the form of McGregor's bearded visage, is growing into the moral authority and gruff wit exuded by Alec Guinness as the fogie Kenobi in Star Wars. And not just because the audience knows they will be the parents of Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia. As the galaxy careers toward catastrophe, the imminence of total war unites them, gives emotional weight...

...super strength and rear-mounted machine guns to fight evil robots. The longest of the three self-contained stories, "The Hot Dog Corps," involves a queen whose robot spaceship pilots shoot down any rocket headed for the moon. Filled with the mischievous mayhem that boys love, but told with wit and imagination, the stories always have an underlying theme of friendship and goodwill. Drawn with a whimsical simplicity based heavily on the Disney cartoons, Tezuka has a loopy sense of humor. He will sometimes insert nonsense characters into a scene just for fun. One Brechtian moment has Mr. Mustachio kicking...
