...just silly or frantic either. What is perhaps nicest about it is its prevailingly playful tone. What is weakest is its dialogue, which is too seldom really bright and too often near-neighbor to the gag. Fortunately, a number of lines that were not born witty achieve a certain wit through the adroitness of the cast. Margaret Sullavan, Claude Dauphin, and Robert Preston as the tycoon, lend a certain airy charm, provide a certain steady carbonation...

Each group was at its best for Irving Fine's Three Choruses from Alice in Wonderland, which was completely captivating with the addition of modern dance. Susan Zucker's charming choreography for Beautiful Soup emphasized the wit of Lewis Carroll's text. Director Caroline Martin presented the entire Dance Group in Eixa Nit es Nit, a haunting setting of a Catalan carol by Joaquin Nin. The dancers moved in willowy, flexible patterns, and the Choral tone was excellent. It is unfortunate that the concert was little known in the Harvard community; future joint recitals deserve better publicity...

...weakness for sweet opera, and much of Hoffmann fits into the sucre fashion of Gounod's Faust, Saint-Saens' Samson et Dalila, etc. When it tries to get serious, it often just turns watery. But the score, if well played, always bubbles with its own kind of wit and Gallic lyricism...
