...fern named Salvinia auriculata appeared in patches that spread with astonishing speed. By last week dense mats, some of them strong enough to support a man, covered 15% of the lake, and local scientists were in a dither. Professor Boris I. Balinsky of Johannesburg's University of the Witwatersrand warned that Salvinia might turn the lake into a swamp and eventually...
Cracked Barricade. Opening Feb. 2, 1959 in the Great Hall at Johannesburg's University of the Witwatersrand (the only place in the city where an opera-sized production could be staged before a mixed audience). King Kong was an instant hit, and played before 120,000 persons-two-thirds of them white-in Johannesburg, Durban, Port Elizabeth, and Cape Town. Then, as now in London, heavyweight Jazz Singer Nathan M'dledle (pronounced Muh-dead-ly) played "the King." His girl was played by Miriam Makeba, whose success in the role catapulted her to solo spots in U.S. nightclubs...

A petition will circulate in Harvard this week, similar to one that will be introduced into every university in the non-Communist world, condemning the segregation. Though such action may have little effect, it will further remind Strijdom that his policies are in little accord with the Western principles he is trying to preserve in South Africa. The fact...
Last week New York's Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, one of the backers of the search, heard from Dr. Raymond A. Dart of Witwatersrand University. Deep in the same stony layer where Digger Brain had found the tools, Alun R. Hughes and Revill Mason found two teeth of prometheus. Dr. Dart considered the find good evidence that prometheus "was actually coexistent with, and in all probability responsible for, that very primitive stone pebble culture...
