...along West Hollywood's main artery, Santa Monica Boulevard. There, a black-clad Lubavitcher family straight out of 19th century Lithuania strolls past a bus bench shared by a sneering heavy-metal-music freak with a slime green Mohawk and a drag queen done up as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. Across the way, a convenience store advertises European specialties in Russian Cyrillic characters. And up the boulevard rolls a procession of white stretch limos, trundling the show-biz glitterati (and their accountants and orthodontists) to West Hollywood's tonier night spots...
Arthur takes on his troubles squarely, but where is his advisor Merlin anyway? The wizard is often alluded to but his absence is never explained. A watchful eye clearly presides over the production--but it almost certainly is Neher's. Three cheers for his efforts and those of his cast. Together they have reined in the lavish aura of the play to craft a drama of some depth and wisdom. The small cast fills the equally small stage with a bewitching blend of merriment, music, and bittersweet lessons...
...remaining 90 minutes to Roanoke, I found myself wedged between a man in a camouflage jacket and a Confederate "Forget hell!" hat who may well have been the Imperial Wizard, and another man who looked unnervingly like Charles Manson. When I wasn't choking on the fumes of the former's Camels, I was gagging in the acrid smoke of the latter's home-grown monstrosities...
