Michigan more than fulfilled its part of the bargain; the lingering gaps in my education (the inability to commune with head waiters in flawless French, tone-deaf ignorance of classical music, and scientific training that stopped with Mr. Wizard) are entirely my own fault. ...plot does not, however, manage to explain the closing French Can-Can kickline and Wizard of Oz sequence, which have literally nothing to do with each other, the plot, the Victorian era or the '70s. (My guess is that the writers associate the 1939 movie with their childhood, and so with the '70s period as a whole.) But you can't change every stupid tradition at once, and this fresh, fun production has more going for it than any Pudding show I've seen...

...this just P.H.C. at the Plaza? Sure. Maybe. No. There was, of course, a rambling dispatch from Lake Wobegon (Pastor Ingqvist, Keillor reported with approval, shocked his congregation at Thanksgiving by urging them to "sin boldly"). Tom Keith, P.H.C.'s sound-effects wizard, was on hand to provide, among other arcanities, the splash of George Washington's silver dollar falling short into the Rappahannock. The show's funniest sketch, a serial, produced a new star, actress Ivy Austin. She plays Gloria, big-city girl, . whose boyfriend (as she confesses endlessly to her hairdresser) wants her to give up everything...
