FARM INEFFICIENCY. Though the Soviet press has not directly mentioned the size of this year's shortfall or of grain purchases from abroad, it is filled with complaints about the troubles of farmers. Many articles lament the woeful state of Soviet farm machinery and the lack of spares. By one count, 450 harvesters in three Novosibirsk districts alone are laid up at present for want of parts. Krokodil, the satirical weekly, recently ran a cartoon showing a farm worker running a lottery to get a spare part for his thresher. Pravda complained that harvesters manufactured at the Krasnoyarsk plant...

...must also be said, however, that her appearance takes up about two minutes of what is otherwise a woeful enterprise. The nominal stars of the show, besides the zealously mediocre Sarrazin, are Jennifer O'Neill, who always looks freshly daubed, Margot Kidder, who drinks heavily and masturbates in the bathtub, and Cornelia Sharpe, struggling to speak words over a single syllable. Shakespeare ends his entrancing balcony scene by giving Juliet a godawful valedictory couplet; and, when she is discovered apparently lifeless, the Nurse's "O woeful day" speech is embarrassing. Then there are those two short consecutive scenes that inflict the words "banished" and "banishment" on us no less than 26 times. Not even General St. Pe's repeated references to his "seventeen years" of marriage in Waltz of the Toreadors can come close to the numbing annoyance of this portion of Romeo...

...Year's Eve television screens, Evangelist Billy Graham, sports-jacketed and gray-templed, delivered a fireside jeremiad. Citing the year's woeful parade of scandals, crises and other miseries, Graham warned that the U.S. would experience even worse difficulties if Americans did not forthwith repent and return to God. "The only answer," he said, "is Jesus...
