Early last Monday morning, I offered to help a student group I belong to with a round of postering in the Yard. I am, however, forced to admit that this was not an act of noble sentiments, a sudden blush of neighborly feeling that struck at dawn. I woke up to be an ethnographer...
...largest government bailout in U.S. history was born before dawn on Sept. 17, when Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke woke up at 6 a.m., checked his BlackBerry and saw the very thing he had dreaded: the futures market in free fall. Bernanke, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and New York Fed president Timothy Geithner had spent the past year staving off one disaster after another, for the most part working behind the scenes. ...tired of wan, 16-year-old East European models that I woke up super early to go to the Victoria's Secret show. Which, it turned out, was actually just a PowerPoint presentation by its CEO. The seven bayous that run through and around Houston are swollen, and the rain is still coming down. (See photos of Hurricane Ike here...
...Earlier this morning, around 12:30 a.m., an explosion woke me up. It was one of those sounds you hear and feel, as though the bass were turned up really high on your car stereo. At first I thought it was the hurricane, but I could still hear the hum of the air conditioner and the faint noise of the storm coverage on TV. My mom and I looked out the windows and watched orange flames jump into the dark sky as Brennan's restaurant, a Houston institution, burned down...
