...anniversary commemorations. Entitled "No Violence! Revolution in Dresden," it tells of the city's crucial role as the first locality in which people's representatives - the so-called Group of 20 - were able to initiate reform talks with the ruling Socialist Unity Party, in the person of then mayor Wolfgang Berghofer. And in Berlin itself, the highlight of numerous events and displays comes on Nov. 9 with a Festival of Freedom at the Brandenburg Gate, www.mauerfall09.de, which will include the symbolic collapse of a 1.2-mile (2 km) wall of giant dominoes...

...electric cars. Foreign automakers may have a century-long head start on conventional cars, but Chinese companies can compete on new electric technology today - on cost and on performance. "When it comes to electric and hybrid cars, China is challenging the automotive industries in the Western industrial countries," writes Wolfgang Bernhart, a consultant with Roland Berger who estimates that electrics and plug-ins could account for more than half the auto market in China by 2020. ...Piech sees the crisis as an opportunity to turn the tables and for VW to take control of Porsche, rather than the other way around. He's offered to buy Porsche's auto operations - but in a manner that provoked a furious response. Last weekend, the usually press-shy Wolfgang Porsche fired off an angry statement to the media accusing his cousin of issuing an ultimatum that he termed "blackmail." Piech shot back denying that it was an ultimatum. But a phrase in Porsche's statement points to the shock and bewilderment in the family camp about the deterioration...
