...years since, Shepard's mother Judy has become one of the nation's most persuasive representatives for gay equality. I first met Judy Shepard five years ago, when I was reporting on how Wyoming had changed since her son was murdered. She is a small, disarmingly direct woman. The other day, when I asked her how she was doing, she simply responded, "Tired." She had just spoken at two events in Washington, and she had attended the dedication of a park bench in Laramie built for her son. She had also made time to do interviews with more reporters than...
...jaunty title - Happy-Go-Lucky - and a perky protagonist in a young woman called Poppy, played just this side of annoying, but often entrancingly, by Sally Hawkins. Some of the early reviewers have convinced themselves that Mike Leigh's movie is a lightsome romp, a tribute to keeping your spirits up in the noisome atmosphere of lower middle-class London, where Poppy works as a primary school teacher...
These critics have a point. Whether she's dealing with a depressed book store clerk or the fact that her bicycle is stolen while she visits his shop, the young woman remains indefatigably chipper. And that's just the beginning of Leigh's film. As it develops she brings her good cheer to all kinds of situations - an encounter with a homeless man, a bully in her classroom, a difficult relationship with her more bourgeois sister and her dismal husband. Poppy's peppiness sustains her in other, less dramatically pointed ways as well. Like a lot of single working women...
...Southern at all, certainly, but she's got guns and God and all that. The main thing is that she's just so good-looking. The camera loves her. Let me just say first, I deplore her politics and her world view, but she's the first sexy woman politician and that's kind of refreshing in a way. People call John F. Kennedy sexy and Obama sexy, but women politicians have tended to have to be unsexy, and she might have opened the door for a woman politician who can be sexy and also make good sense...
...While the McCain campaign has promoted Palin to religious conservatives as a woman of "strong faith," they have gone to unusual lengths to avoid providing a picture of that faith. In fact, a Palin spokeswoman says the Alaska governor is "not a Pentecostal," and points out that Palin was baptized as a child as a Roman Catholic, although there is no record that her family attended Catholic services before joining the Pentecostal church where she became saved at age 11. The candidate does not even claim the Evangelical label, instead using the code phrase "Bible-believing Christian" to describe herself...
