...unborn child before killing the child and completing the delivery." However, "partial-birth abortion" is a misleading term--as well as a non-medical one--because the Nebraska law and the popular debate applies only to pre-viability abortions in which the fetus is unable to live outside the womb and therefore could not be "born" and survive...

Testosterone is the substance that literally turns boys into boys in the womb. In the first weeks after conception, all embryos are technically sexless. Around the sixth week of gestation, the presence of the Y chromosome in males triggers a complex set of signals that cause a surge in testosterone. Among other things, that sets in motion the formation of the penis and testes. In adolescence, boys undergo another eruption that deepens their voices, causes hair to form on their bodies and allows their muscles to enlarge. Testosterone in the blood of teenage boys can jump to as high...

Nereciana had been looking forward to this ceremony. It is considered bad luck in Rwanda to think up names for a baby before birth; too many don't make it out of the womb alive. But as Nereciana grew heavy with child and finally could no longer waddle out to work in the fields, she imagined the ceremony, the party, the happy times ahead. Joseph was laying in a supply of banana beer. Ripe pineapples, Nereciana's favorite fruit, were abundant. The birth and the naming ceremony would be, after the camp and the long march back, a new beginning...

Does having a short index finger mean you're gay? A new study comparing index and ring-finger lengths says this ratio indicates how much testosterone people were exposed to in the womb, which may influence sexual orientation. Dr. Marc Breedlove, the aptly named Berkeley psychologist who's searching for the anatomical basis of sexual preference, reports that lesbians tend to have substantially shorter index fingers, a trait more common among men than women. Really short index fingers on men don't mean they're gay or straight, the study says; it means they probably have lots of older brothers...

...musters its defenses. PPL scientists recently succeeded in finding the gene responsible for the sugar and knocking it out of the nucleus of a pig cell. Their next step would be to extract that nucleus, insert it into a hollowed-out pig ovum and insert the ovum into the womb of a host sow. The sugar-free piglet that was eventually born could then be cloned over and over as a source of safe transplant organs. "The idea is to arrive at the ideal animal and repeatedly copy it exactly as it is," says Dr. Mark Hardy, director of organ...
