...engines that sustain cell activity. The primary purpose of brown fat is to regulate body temperature: the mitochondria-packed cells are designed to burn high quantities of sugar, the body's fuel, and release that energy as heat - a mechanism that newborns, fresh from the warm confines of the womb, rely on to keep them toasty...

...Roger Lowenstein describes in his book While America Aged, it was the remarkable UAW president Walter Reuther (1907-70) who won womb-to-tomb health-care coverage and retirement benefits for the rank and file. Reuther was an early advocate of universal health-care coverage, which was not going to fly in Washington. So he willingly traded small pay raises for deferred compensation in the form of pensions and retirement health care. The Big Three gladly signed on because the trade-off held down cash wages - and because they were lushly profitable companies, controlling 90% of the U.S. car market...

And the facts of Suleman's conception - she had six embryos implanted in her womb, two of which split into twins - are troubling. Medical guidelines limit the practice to one or two implanted embryos at most. A fertility expert quoted in the Los Angeles Times noted that octuplets are "unbelievably rare. When people use fertility drugs, 80% even then are single births. The vast majority of the others are twins." By that token, Suleman, who is entertaining offers of a reality show and has reportedly fired...
