...where the functions of political phraseology becomes operative. If someone advocates urinating on graves as the Fugs did, or if a few girls dress up as witches and put curses on professors, as they did in Chicago, if they would do so without reference to politics people would rightly wonder about their sanity; but if they do so as a condemnation of the Viet Nam war, or take clothes off while claiming to be demonstrating for some good progressive cause, they have the support of many of the older liberals and enlightened radicals, who will inevitably consider...

...Nabokov novel is intended not as a message?but as a delight. It is also a game in which the alert reader is rewarded by feelings of wonder at the illusiveness of reality. "In a first-rate work of fiction," he argues, "the real clash is not between the characters, but between the author and the world." Nabokov's books are conceived like the chess problems that he has composed during the past half-century. They were often valuable members of teams in high school but, with the abundance of athletic stars at Harvard, cannot make the intercollegiate...

...expect that they will often fail, but also expect that their earnest efforts will be properly appreciated. They cheerfully acknowledge that people disagree with them but cannot believe that they are being laughed at. If Kunen's Srawberry Statement encourages a few liberals to reexamine their reflexive rhetoric, to wonder if they are thinking in terms as large as are the radicals they feel threatened by, then the book will in the end be good for some education, as well as some amusement...

...fact, some clerics in the diocese openly wonder why Leger bothered to come. The well-staffed leprosarium was founded by Bishop Loucheur and Sister Fran?oise Romaine 15 years ago, and now treats 3,000 patients at four clinics. Loucheur has also built a cathedral, numerous schools and 186 miles of roads, and has baptized 43,000 Africans. Léger's position is also ambiguous in the Cameroon capital of Yaounde, where he poses a protocol problem. "As a Cardinal," explains one official, "he outranks every diplomat in the country...
