...Zimbabwe's Torment Readers may wonder how it is that Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has dragged his country into economic collapse and abject poverty, yet millions of Zimbabweans still support him [June 30]. This is because in Africa, tribal feeling remains powerful. The chief of your tribe can do no wrong, and African culture demands that he be supported at all costs. Western nations are justifiably horrified by what is happening in Zimbabwe, but they should bear in mind that the Mugabe regime came to power with their support. Watch South Africa: Its economy and social framework are rapidly following...
...Free Fall to DestinyThe mayhem and torture wreaked here, by saint or scum, are so vivid and persistent that it's a wonder, and a puzzle, why The Dark Knight snagged a PG-13 rating. (Don't take your 9-year-old son unless you think he'd enjoy seeing a kid just like him tremble in fear while a gun is held to his head by a previously sympathetic character.) It makes you wonder whether you yourself, possibly, or let's say your grandmother, might have appeared, smiling, in a photograph of a lynch mob. And just as you're about to block out that queasiness, Twain slams in a snippet of what a particularly despicable lynching (in Texas, as it happened) was like. Oh, God. (The man was slow-roasted...
Grand juries in Texas are sealed affairs, so no one really knows what goes on in their deliberations. But on Monday, a Harris County grand jury refused to indict Horn for any crimes related to the November 2007 shooting. It's the kind of decision that makes you wonder if the jurors themselves were chanting "U.S.A.! U.S.A.!" during deliberations. The decision was celebrated by Horn's defenders, of course. More than anything, though, it was called a victory for the Castle Doctrine...
