...that day, tasting the colors in quick glances. I tipped my cowboy hat at Mrs. Hester van Primm as she walked out of the Hotel Plaza with 20 poodles on a leash, Yes, I was in a pleasant trance the whole day, and, as is my wont in that mood. I traveled down the streets turning circles, looking up at the clouds, balconies, birds, and flags. The city seemed just right. I'm quite susceptible to awe, being a country boy of sorts, originally...

...Nobody around here is going into a dream world," an Administration expert insists. "Washington has been through this many times before." The American generals in Viet Nam, from U.S. Commander Creighton Abrams on down, sedulously forgo the kind of broad statements that Abrams' predecessor, General William Westmoreland, was wont to make-and still occasionally utters (see TIME Essay, page 26). Westmoreland seriously underestimated the adverse effect of the 1968 Tet offensive, which he called a triumph for the U.S., upon public opinion at home. "My Life with Jacqueline Kennedy" was written by Mary Barelli Gallagher, a former J.F.K. secretary, and from 1957 to 1964 one of Jackie's girls-of-all-work. Washington gossips are wont to make unkind jokes about "Plastic Pat, the Wind-Up Doll." But Pat Nixon has paid them no heed. Pat, backed up by Daughters Tricia and Julie, made the rounds of wounded servicemen at Honolulu's Tripler General Hospital. She was completely relaxed with the G.I.s, who were as impressed with her as they were with Julie's interest and enthusiasm and Tricia's flowing golden tresses. The Nixon ladies then returned to Washington, but not for long. Pat leaves on a three-day trip to California and the Pacific Northwest this week...

...asleep, or reminiscing about the good old days of the Great Plague, Gitter's creation is compelling and convincingly pragmatic. Jones as Everyman holds the center of attention firmly, but much of the first act could be played with less method intensity, more of the light farce Mayer is wont to introduce on occasion. Last night, Iver's tightly-knit band, his stylized compositions and arrangements, and extraordinary singer George Leh, came as close to stealing a show as anybody comes working with Mayer...
