...Bush nominee Linda Chavez learned Tuesday and Clinton nominees Zoe Baird and Kimba Wood learned back in 1993, many Americans appear to feel there's something singularly distressing about a woman who's not totally in control of household events and expenditures. It's the household after all, we murmur. Shouldn't she have been spending more time at home? That way she wouldn't have had to hire illegal immigrants to do her job in the first place...
...chocolate shop, the sensual products of which are bound to remind the locals that life has more to offer than churchgoing and spousal abuse. Their goodies place them in conflict with the rectitudinous mayor (Alfred Molina) but warm the chilled souls of various inhabitants (Judi Dench, Lena Olin, John Wood). Vianne eventually makes common romantic cause with a riverboat wanderer (Depp), who also scandalizes the town with his unsettled and unsettling ways...
...very few shops in the city where hats are actually made on the premises, Barbara and apprentice designer Mei Lan Low hand-block and hand-craft hats from start to finish using techniques and equipment scarcely changed since the 19th century. Says Feinman, "Some of the wood blocks we use are probably 100 years old, and the sewing machine we sew hats on, called a setup machine, is a refurbished antique. You can't buy a new one; the machines are not manufactured anymore." Styles range from fedoras to cloches and are made for men and women. Although custom-made...

Despite its tired references to death, hell and maggots, "In the Shadow of the Valley of Death" is a haunting and effective acoustic number, and dirge-like opener "Godeatgod" shows surprising restraint. It's obvious that great care was taken in constructing the songs on Holy Wood; guitars chugging over suggestive...
After repeated listenings, however, it becomes apparent that while an undeniably solid album, Holy Wood is far too reminiscent of Antichrist Superstar. This is especially obvious in the syncopated, headbanger beat of current single "Disposable Teens," a near mirror-image of "The Beautiful People." Rather than reinvent his band a third time, Manson has instead chosen to tweak and polish that former album's brand of Gothic-flavored industrial riffage. Holy Wood's ultimate downfall is its refusal to take risks; as such, it's an anticlimactic conclusion to an interesting cycle. B- -Ryan...
