...seems trite: the objects are robbed of their aesthetic autonomy as Davey manipulates them for some “unambiguously productive” purpose. People are rarely the subject of Davey’s pieces, with the occasional exception of hands holding a steak bone or feet on a wooden floor. Far more compelling, however, are the photographs that call attention to the quotidian objects that usually go unnoticed. In one pair of prints, a refrigerator decorated with papers and magnets, surrounded by a microwave and other appliance wires, stands next a print of cheap ceiling lights...

...knows all about societies in transformation. He revisits Beijing often these days to help design the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics. But an ambivalence about his burgeoning homeland courses through his art. On the one hand, there's his 1998 piece Borrowing Your Enemy's Arrows--a wooden boat flying a Chinese flag and pierced by hundreds of arrows. It has its sources in the story of a 3rd century Chinese general who had to gather arrows before a battle and did it by surprising the enemy with a predawn flotilla manned by straw sailors. The enemy responded...

There are two important rules at Combat Outpost Rabiya, a tiny compound recently erected by U.S. troops on the west side of Mosul. First, do not urinate in any of the three wooden outhouses built over a ditch in the back. The waste has to be burned since there is no running water, and that is difficult to do when it's wet. ...Shore is the most promising venue in Beijing's budding jazz scene. Located on the banks of Lake Houhai, East Shore is a refuge from the trinket sellers and gaudy bars along the crowded shore. Its large windows give clear views over the water, and leather armchairs and dark wooden floorboards provide the necessary sultry ambiance. Thursdays through Sundays, a constellation of house bands, including the owner's Liu Yuan Jazz Quartet, plays from 10 p.m. until late, usually packing the 30-some-seat...

...Indiana Jones's creators understood, the Ark is one of the Bible's holiest objects, and also one of its most maddening McGuffins. A wooden box, roughly 4 ft. x 2 ft. x 2.5 ft., perhaps gold-plated and carried on poles inserted into rings, it appears in the Good Book variously as the container for the Ten Commandments (Exodus 25:16: "and thou shalt put into the ark the testimony which I shall give thee"); the very locus of God's earthly presence; and as a divine flamethrower that burns obstacles and also crisps some careless Israelites...
